Petit Puits, in the centre of rue Plô in the City: inscription by decree of 26 March 1926
Origin and history
The Petit Puits de Carcassonne is a medieval hydraulic structure dug directly into the 14th century rock. With a diameter of approximately 1.60 metres and a depth of 21.40 metres, it is distinguished by its stone margin, typical of this period. The structure consists of two batteries connected by a monolithic sandstone crossover, designed to avoid any imbalance of the supporting elements. Bronze pulleys, sealed in the margin, probably facilitated water extraction, reflecting the advanced craft techniques of the time.
This well is located in the heart of the Cité de Carcassonne, more precisely in the centre of Rue Plô, a strategic location in a fortified urban area. Its inscription as a Historic Monument by decree of 26 March 1926 underlines its heritage importance. The property now belongs to the municipality, and although its original use is linked to water supply, its current state of conservation and accessibility are not specified in the available sources.
The design of the Petit Puits illustrates a remarkable mastery of hydraulics and medieval mechanics. The sandstone crossover, cut in one piece, and the integration of the battery bases into the plastrus penetrating the margin show particular attention to stability and durability. These technical characteristics, combined with the use of local materials such as sandstone, make it a representative example of Languedoc's urban infrastructure in the Middle Ages.
