Portal and residences of the main residents: registration by decree of 10 January 1934

Origin and history

The Meaux Visitation Monastery is a religious building located in the city of Meaux, Seine-et-Marne. This monument, partially protected under the title of Historical Monuments, is distinguished by its portal and its residence of the great residents, registered by ministerial decree in 1934. Today, it belongs to a private company, which limits its accessibility to the public.

The buildings of the monastery illustrate the religious architecture typical of the establishments of the Order of Visitation, founded in the seventeenth century to welcome women dedicated to contemplative life. In Meaux, as in other cities, these monasteries played an important social and spiritual role, often linked to the education or reception of residents from wealthy families. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Church in urban organization and the daily life of the inhabitants of the region.
