Portail d'entrée, maison sous du Métayer and monumental well (Box 9-8): inscription by order of 24 February 1986
Origin and history
La Cense du Koenigsberg is a historical monument located in Sierck-les-Bains, Moselle department (Great East). This site, whose origins date back to the 15th, 16th, 17th and first half of the 18th century, consists of an entrance gate, a Métayer house and a monumental well. These elements, inscribed by decree of 24 February 1986, bear witness to the rural and agricultural architecture of the region throughout the centuries. The property is shared between private hands and the municipality.
The building illustrates the evolution of seigneurial farms in Lorraine, often linked to land use and community life. In modern times, these censes played a central role in the local economy, combining agriculture, livestock farming and sometimes artisanal activities. Their architecture reflects practical needs (housing, storage, access to water) and social hierarchies, with spaces dedicated to farmers or owners. The monumental well, a rare element, underlines the importance of water supply in these sets.
The location of the Koenigsberg Cense near the Luxembourg border suggests a history marked by cross-border cultural and economic exchanges. The region, integrated into the Duchy of Lorraine and then into France, experienced periods of prosperity linked to trade, viticulture and handicrafts. Monuments such as this also remind feudal and post-feudal structures, where lords and peasants lived in a system of mutual rights and duties.
