Cross, in the new cemetery: inscription by order of 8 February 1928
Origin and history
The monumental cross of Oigny-en-Valois is a cemetery cross built in the 14th century. Originally located in the old cemetery surrounding the village church, it was moved towards the end of the 19th century in the new cemetery, at the entrance of the commune. It is distinguished by its sculpted representation of Christ crucified and the Virgin, typical of medieval funeral crosses.
Ranked a historical monument by decree of 8 February 1928, this cross illustrates the religious art of the late Middle Ages in the region. Its displacement in the 19th century reflects the urban transformations and redevelopments of funeral spaces, frequent at that time. Today, it remains a material testimony of piety and local commemorative practices in the 14th century.
Located in the department of Aisne, in Hauts-de-France, this cross is part of a regional heritage marked by medieval religious monuments. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underscores its heritage and artistic value, while offering an overview of the funeral traditions of historical Picardie.
