Stone cross of the 16th century located in the cemetery: classification by decree of 21 December 1938
Origin and history
The cross of Sainte-Colombe-en-Auxois is a 16th century stone historic monument. It is located in the cemetery of this village of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, in the Côte-d'Or department (code INSEE 21544). The building was classified by ministerial order on December 21, 1938, recognizing its exceptional heritage value.
This type of monumental cross, typical of the Burgundy countryside of the Renaissance, often served as a religious and funeral landmark for local communities. At that time, villages like Sainte-Colombe-en-Auxois were organized around their church and cemetery, central places of social and spiritual life. These crosses also marked the limits of sacred spaces or important crossroads.
The current location of the cross within the cemetery suggests that it probably retained its original function: a symbol of faith and a gathering point for religious ceremonies. The accuracy of its geographical location is assessed as fair (level 5/10), with an approximate address at 4 Rue du Moulin.
Owned by the commune, this cross illustrates the funerary architecture of the 16th century Burgundy. Its ranking among the Historical Monuments in 1938 shows the importance attached to the preservation of this local heritage, although the available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not provide details about its sponsor or artist.
