Origin and history

The 16th century Cross, also called the Cross of the Carrefour Deux-Ponts/Petit-Pelo, is located in Ploërmel, Morbihan, Brittany. It is located at the crossroads of Deux-Ponts and Petit-Pelo streets, a strategic location in the city. This monument is a carved granite calvary cross, typical of Breton Christian Renaissance architecture. It presents, on one side, a representation of the crucifixion, and on the other, the crowning of the Virgin. Four saints are also carved on the barrel, accompanied by decorative motifs called love lakes.

The cross was listed as historic monuments on May 30, 1927, recognizing its heritage and artistic value. It belongs to the town of Ploërmel and is located in the public domain, at the corner of the road of Guillac and the street of the Deux-Ponts. His style and sculptures reflect the importance of calvaries in Breton religious culture, often erected at crossroads or near churches to mark a place of devotion or gathering.
