Origin and history

The cross of Saint-Colombiar is a banner cross located in Saint-Nolff, Morbihan, near the chapel of Saint-Colomban. Dated from the 16th century, it was listed as historical monuments on 13 February 1929. This monument is distinguished by its carved rectangular base, representing religious scenes such as the Resurrection, Christ descending to the limbs, and the Cross Bearing. The characters are dressed in costumes typical of the Valois era, adding a historical and artistic dimension to the monument.

The cross also presents notable architectural details, such as an old barrel replaced by a heavier barrel, and an upper table framed by columns. On its faces, we find representations of Christ on the cross between the Virgin and Saint John, as well as a Pietà. These carved elements are surmounted by accolades and angel heads, crowned by a cross. The Cross of Saint-Colombiar is a remarkable example of Breton Renaissance religious art, reflecting the beliefs and artistic practices of the time.

The monument is located on a communal land, at the address 21bis Route de Saint-Colombiar, and remains an important witness to the local heritage. Its inscription as a historical monument underlines its cultural and artistic importance for the region of Brittany and the Morbihan department. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be fair, with GPS coordinates allowing it to be located approximately on the commune of Saint-Nolff.

The scenes carved on the cross include various characters, such as monks, knights, and biblical figures, offering an overview of religious narratives and cultural influences of the time. The banner cross, a specific type of monument, often served as a spiritual landmark and symbol of devotion for local communities. Its state of conservation and the changes made over the centuries, such as the replacement of the barrel, bear witness to its history and maintenance by successive generations.

The Cross of Saint Colombia is part of a historical context where religious monuments played a central role in the daily life of the people. In the Renaissance, in Brittany, these crosses served not only as supports for devotion, but also as territorial markers and gathering points for the faithful. Their rich iconography reflected the teachings of the Church and local traditions, while integrating innovative artistic elements for the time.

Finally, the cross of Saint Colombia is a typical example of the Breton crosses of the period, characterized by their religious symbolism and social function. His inscription as a historical monument in 1929 preserved this heritage for future generations, while offering a tangible witness to 16th century art and spirituality in Brittany.
