Cemetery Cross: by order of 22 June 1942
Origin and history
The cross of the cemetery of Laubressel is a religious monument located in the municipality of Laubressel, in the Aube department, in the Grand Est region. Dating from the second quarter of the seventeenth century, this cross is representative of the funeral buildings of this period, often erected to mark sacred spaces or commemorate local events. Its architecture and its location in the cemetery underline its symbolic and spiritual role within the village community.
In the 17th century, the villages of Champagne-Ardenne, like Laubressel, were mainly organized around agriculture and viticulture, major economic activities of the region. The cemetery crosses played a central role in social and religious life: they served as a gathering point for ceremonies, a visual landmark in the landscape, and a symbol of the Christian faith. Their presence also reflected the importance attached to the commemoration of the deceased and the structuring of communal spaces under the influence of the Church or local lords.
