Stone cemetery cross, 16s : classification by decree of 29 June 1912
Origin and history
The Peivres Cemetery Cross is a 16th century stone religious monument. It is located in the commune of Poivres, in the Aube department, in the Grand Est region. Classified as historical monuments by order of 29 June 1912, it bears witness to the importance of Christian symbols in the funeral spaces of that time.
The cemetery crosses, like the one at Poivres, served as both a sacred marker and a gathering point for religious ceremonies. In the 16th century, in the Champagne countryside, these monuments played a central role in community life, often linked to funeral practices and processions. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Church in the social and spatial organization of the villages.
