Origin and history

The cross of Vaux d'Amognes is a historical monument located in the Nièvre department, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dating from the 15th century, it is classified as a Historical Monument by order of 14 June 1909. This stone cross is located near the village of Vaux d'Amognes, in the communal territory of Ourouër, as indicated by the data of the Merimée database.

Medieval crosses, such as Vaux d'Amognes, often played a symbolic and religious role in rural communities. In the 15th century, Burgundy was a region marked by strong agricultural and artisanal activity, where monuments of this type served as spiritual or commemorative landmarks. Their presence also reflected the importance of the Christian faith in the daily lives of the inhabitants, as well as the social organization around local parishes and lords.
