Cross of Saint-Antoine in carved stone (Box B 2): classification by decree of 4 December 1959

Origin and history

La Croix de Saint-Antoine, also known as the Cross Dame Marie, is a carved stone cross located in the commune of La Demie in the Haute-Saône department. Dating from the first quarter of the seventeenth century, it is representative of the religious monuments of this period, often erected to mark places of devotion or crossroads.

Classified as historical monuments by decree of 4 December 1959, this cross belongs today to the municipality of La Demie. Its exact location is referenced in the Mérimée base under Cadastre B 2. Although little detail is available on its specific history, its ranking reflects its heritage importance and artistic value.

The Haute-Saône, where La Demie is located, was in modern times a rural area marked by a strong religious presence. The cross of paths or crossroads, like that of Saint-Antoine, often served as spiritual and community landmarks. They could also commemorate local events or divine protections invoked against epidemics or weather.

Today, the cross of Saint-Antoine remains an element of the historical landscape of La Demie. Its state of conservation and location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" in the databases, make it a point of interest for those passionate about heritage and local history.
