Origin and history

La Croix du Haut-Corlay is a historical monument located in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany. It is precisely on the road to Quintin, in the commune of Haut-Corlay. Dating from the 16th century, this cross is representative of the religious buildings of this period, often erected to mark places of assembly or important crossroads.

The cross was inscribed as historical monuments by an order of 22 March 1930. This official protection underscores its heritage and cultural importance. Today it belongs to the commune of Haut-Corlay, which guarantees its preservation and maintenance. Although little details are available on its specific history, its inscription in the Merimée base and its precise location attest to its anchoring in the local landscape.

In the 16th century, Brittany was a region marked by strong religious activity and a social organization centred around parishes. The monumental crosses, such as that of Upper Corlay, often played a symbolic and practical role: they served as landmarks for pilgrims, places of prayer or commemoration of local events. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Church in the daily lives of rural communities.
