16th century cross with its base and stone bench: inscription by decree of 4 July 1955
Origin and history
The cross of Roche, located in the place of the Church in the commune of the same name, dates from the 16th century. This monument, typical of the religious achievements of the time, consists of a cross mounted on a base and accompanied by a stone bench. Its architecture reflects the local artistic and devotional practices of the Renaissance, a period marked by a revival of religious expressions in the French countryside.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 4 July 1955, this cross belongs to the commune of Roche, in the Loire department (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Its designation as historic monuments underlines its heritage importance, although its exact location is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10). Like other crosses of this period, it probably served as a spiritual or commemorative landmark for the village community, in a rural context where Christian symbols rhythmized daily life and public gatherings.
Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, indicate that the cross is still at its original location, Church Square, although its approximate GPS address (5014 Le Bourg) may be confusing. No information is provided on its current accessibility or tourist use, such as guided tours or ancillary services. Communal property, however, suggests active preservation, in line with its protected status obligations.
