Origin and history
La Croix de Saint-Cirgues-sur-Couze is a historic monument in the municipality of the same name, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Dating from the 16th century, it represents a typical example of the monumental crosses erected in French villages at that time. Its classification by decree of 12 July 1886 demonstrates its heritage importance and its preservation as part of the local historical landscape.
Crosses of this type often served as a religious landmark or symbol for the inhabitants of villages. In the 16th century, the Auvergne region was marked by a rural life centered around agriculture, livestock and artisanal activities. These monuments, in addition to their religious function, could also play a role in structuring the communal space, marking places of assembly or important crossroads.
The location of this cross at 1 Place de la Croix suggests that it occupied a central place in the village. Its state of conservation and legal protection make it a key element of the local heritage, reflecting the history and traditions of Saint-Cirgues-sur-Couze.
