Origin and history
The cross of the crossroads of the gendarmerie of Rougemont is a monumental cross erected in the 16th century, located in the village of Rougemont, in the Doubs department (region Burgundy-Franche-Comté). It stands at the intersection of the departmental road 486 and Rue de la Grande-Côte, in the heart of the village. A height of 3.79 meters, it is carved of cut stone and rests on an octagonal pedestal topped by a column. His faces represent a Christ on the cross with Mary Magdalene at her feet, as well as a Virgin.
This cross served as a gathering point for rogations (religious processes) until the beginning of the 20th century. It reflects popular piety and local Catholic traditions. Inscribed to historical monuments by decree of 12 January 1990, it now belongs to the commune of Rougemont. Its base, adapted to the slope of the terrain, rests on a massif of masonry, strengthening its stability.
Architecturally, the cross combines typical elements of Renaissance religious art: an octagonal column, a pedestal with cut corners and carved figures. Its strategic location, at the crossroads of important routes, suggests a symbolic and practical role in the community life of Rougemont throughout the centuries.
