Origin and history
La Croix Noell is a cross of crossroads located in Vinça, in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, in the Occitanie region. Dating from the first half of the 15th century, this marble monument is distinguished by its sculptures: a Christ surrounded by stylized plant motifs on one side, and a Virgin with Child on the other. Its base, composed of elements of different epochs, bears an inscription in Gothic letters: "Mossen Guille(m) Riba Alias Maco Ma Feta Fer", attesting to its medieval origin and its connection to an influential local family.
The cross was sponsored by a member of the Guillem Riba family, consuls of Vinça in 1361 and 1407, as the historical sources indicate. Its octagonal base, decorated with Gothic bays in relief, rests on a re-used marble barrel, while a modern pink marble cube supports the cross itself. Ranked a historic monument on 8 June 1989, it stands today close to Square Henry Noell, at the crossroads of Rue du Barris, thus marking the religious and civil heritage of the commune.
The monument illustrates the artistic and devotional practices of the 15th century in Roussillon, where the crossroads crosses served both as spiritual landmarks and as territorial marks. Its Gothic inscription and sculptural elements reflect the influence of local workshops, as well as the patronage of wealthy families, such as the Guillem Riba, involved in Vinça's governance. The diversity of marbles used suggests re-uses or later additions, reflecting a complex material history.
The protection of the Noell Cross in 1989 underlines its heritage importance, both for its artistic value and for its anchoring in the social history of Vinça. The plant motifs surrounding Christ, typical of the flamboyant Gothic, and the Marian representation recall the dominant iconographic themes of the time. Today, this monument remains a historical and tourist landmark, inviting you to discover the medieval past of the Eastern Pyrenees.
