Cross of crossroads of the 16th century, granite: inscription by decree of 24 September 1964
Origin and history
The cross of Kervoënno is a historical monument located in Lannion, in the Côtes-d'Armor department, Brittany. Dated from the 16th century, this cross of granite crossroads is distinguished by its architectural structure: a base with two steps, topped by a base adorned with a stylized symmetrical sheet and an overlay in relief. The barrel bears a sober representation of Christ, without any additional ornamentation. This type of monument reflects the importance of religious symbols in the public space of Brittany at that time, often linked to pilgrimage paths or parish boundaries.
The cross was inscribed as historical monuments by an order of 24 September 1964, thereby recognizing its heritage value. It is located precisely at 6 Le Calvaire, in the communal territory of Lannion, and belongs to the municipality. Its sober style and sculpted motifs, such as the stylized sheet and the ostensoir, illustrate the local artistic influences of the 16th century, a period marked by religious renewal and an affirmation of identity in Brittany. These crosses also served as landmarks for travellers and as supports for popular devotion.
The monument is part of a historical context where cross-crosses played a central role in the daily and spiritual life of Breton communities. They often produced places of assembly, prayer or protection, while marking strategic points such as road intersections or village entrances. Their preservation today reflects the commitment of local people to their religious and cultural heritage, as well as the importance attached to collective memory and regional traditions.
