Origin and history

It is a 17th- and 18th-century building in Ille-sur-Têt, Occitanie, located in the heart of the city of Illa. Although the current buildings date from this period, its foundation dates back to 1139, as evidenced by the first text mentioning it. Now transformed into a museum, it is dedicated to Romanesque art and sacred art, thus preserving a major religious and architectural heritage of the region.

The current structure of the hospital includes a one-storey rectangular building body, organized around a dormitory for patients. The latter, divided into two levels, presents alcoves arranged on both sides of a central corridor, vaulted with ridges. The west facade, adorned with a broken baroque pediment, and the chapel attests to a neat architecture, with a nave with three spans covered with vaults in cradle and a vaulted choir of ridges.

Ranked a historic monument in 1987, the hospice includes in its protection the chapel, the dormitory, the cloister's gate and the west gate. These elements, together with their direct communication between the chapel and the dormitory levels, illustrate a functional and spiritual design typical of medieval and modern hospices. The property, now managed by the municipality, continues its cultural and heritage role.

Official sources, such as the Mérimée base of the Ministry of Culture, confirm its status as a protected monument and its precise address: 13 Rue de l'Hôpital in Ille-sur-Têt. Its history, from its medieval mention to its museum conversion, makes it an emblematic place of the Pyrénées-Orientales, combining hospital memory and artistic valorization.
