Bâtisse pottery oven (Box C 139): inscription by order of 23 December 1985
Origin and history
The pottery oven of La Bâtisse is an artisanal building built at the end of the 18th century, more precisely during the 4th quarter of this century. Located in the hamlet of La Bâtisse, on the commune of Moutiers-en-Puisaye, this oven illustrates the traditional pottery techniques of the time. Its architecture and state of conservation make it a rare testimony of pottery activity in Burgundy at this time.
The monument was listed as historical monuments by order of 23 December 1985. This protection recognizes its heritage importance and allows its preservation. The oven is located precisely at the place called La Bâtisse, in the department of Yonne, in the region Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Its registration in the Mérimée base confirms its official status and historical value.
At the end of the 18th century, pottery was an essential activity in many French rural areas, including Burgundy. Ovens such as La Bâtisse were used to cook utility ceramics, intended for the domestic and agricultural needs of local people. These structures reflect the economic and social organization of communities, where handicrafts played a central role in everyday life.
