La Croix de Créteuil : inscription by decree of 29 June 1927

Origin and history

The cross of Creteuil is an emblematic monument located in the commune of Chaudenay, in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dating from the 4th quarter of the 15th century, this cross of paths bears witness to religious architecture and devotional practices of the late Middle Ages. It embodies a preserved local heritage, typical of the small rural communes of this region.

Classified as historical monuments by decree of 29 June 1927, the cross of Creteuil illustrates the importance attached to the protection of minor religious buildings, often linked to local traditions or pilgrimage routes. Its inscription in the Mérimée base and its precise location (35 Créteuil, 71150 Chaudenay) make it a point of interest for those passionate about history and rural heritage.

At the time of its construction, Burgundy-Franche-Comté was a region marked by strong agricultural and artisanal activity, where the road crosses served as spiritual landmarks and gathering places for village communities. These monuments, often erected at the crossroads or at the entrances of villages, played a role both religious and social, strengthening local cohesion around shared Christian symbols.
