Origin and history

The former Lycée Lamartine de Mâcon is a historical school located in the commune of Mâcon, Saône-et-Loire. Founded in the 17th century by the Jesuits, it succeeds a first college installed in 1627 at the hospital Saint-Jacques, which became too small. In 1670, with the agreement of the aldermen, a new building was erected to accommodate the pupils, marking the beginning of a long educational tradition on this site.

The college, then high school, operated continuously until 1959, when it was transferred near the Duhesme barracks. The original building, representative of the Jesuit educational architecture of the seventeenth century, is partially protected: its facades and roofs have been inscribed in historical monuments since 22 July 1937. Today, it remains an emblematic heritage of Mâcon and the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region.

The site illustrates the evolution of teaching in France, from Jesuit colleges of the Ancien Régime to modern high schools. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underlines its architectural and cultural importance, although its precise location (9005 Rue Georges Lecomte) and its current use are not detailed in the available sources.
