Origin and history

The Langres Museum of Art and History, also known as the Guy-Baillet Museum, was founded in 1841 by the Langres Historical and Archaeological Society (SHAL). Set up in a 12th century abandoned church dedicated to Saint Didier, it was born from the will of young local scholars, such as Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey and Étienne Pistollet de Saint-Frejeux, to preserve the archaeological remains of the region. These collectors, inspired by traditions dating back to the 16th century, brought together Latin inscriptions, Gallo-Roman sculptures and ancient objects, transforming the church choir into a lapidary depot in 1837.

The museum is enriched over the centuries by major donations, such as that of the brothers Royer in 1943, including works by Gustave Courbet, Eugene Delacroix, and the faiences of Aprey. In the 20th century, it also included prehistoric pieces (Paleolithic tools of Farincourt), deposits of the Louvre (the Roman imperial statue discovered in 1660), and ancient photographs. In 1995, a contemporary building was added to the church, modernizing the space while preserving the Romanesque chapel Saint-Didier, where medieval statues were exhibited. Today, the museum highlights masterpieces such as the canvas Jesus among the doctors of José de Ribera.

The history of the museum reflects the long-term commitment of the Langrois to their heritage. From the 18th century, figures like Guyot de Saint-Michel (1736–99), a lawyer and collector, gathered paintings, coins and books, foreshadowing the encyclopedic ambitions of the 19th century founders. SHAL, active since 1842, has played a key role in the acquisition of archaeological and artistic objects, while the School of Drawing in Langres (XIX-20th centuries) has fed collections into local works. The museum thus embodies a collective memory, combining art, history and science for over 180 years.
