Lantern of the Dead: inscription by decree of 17 July 1926

Origin and history

The lantern of the dead of Cébazat is a funeral monument located in the commune of the same name, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Dating from the 15th century, this type of building was generally associated with medieval cemeteries, serving as a symbol of light to guide the souls of the deceased or mark a sacred place. Its architecture, typical of the lanterns of the dead, is distinguished by a slender and open structure, allowing light to appear.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 17 July 1926, this lantern is specifically referred to as a "fireplace" in official texts. Today it belongs to the municipality of Cébazat and stands near Albert Camus Square, according to the GPS coordinates available. Although its exact use in the Middle Ages is not detailed in the sources, the lanterns of the dead were often related to the religious and commemorative practices of the time, reflecting beliefs in the purification of souls.

The location of this monument is estimated as "passible" (note 5/10) in heritage databases, suggesting an approximation in its current geolocation. No information shall be provided concerning its accessibility to the public, its tourist purpose or any restoration.
