Origin and history
The lantern of the dead of Château-Larcher is an early 13th century building erected in the village cemetery. Built of limestone-cut stone, it peaks at 8.5 meters and consists of a cylindrical column of 5 meters, placed on a cubic base with an altar. Four bays in the middle, oriented to the cardinal points, pierce the sommital lanternnon, surmounted by a scale roof and a Maltese cross added in 1840. A conical opening allowed the fume to be removed, while a low door allowed the inner fan to be lit.
Ranked among the first French Historical Monuments in 1840, this lantern illustrates a medieval funeral tradition: maintaining a flame near the graves, symbol of passage to the celestial light. Its architecture, both sober and symbolic, reflects the Christian beliefs of the time, where light guided souls. The assumptions about his function vary, ranging from the lighthouse for lost travellers to a landmark for the dead, although the thesis of the funeral fanal remains privileged.
The structure rests on a pedestal accessible by five steps, with a protruding stone having served as altar according to the local tradition. The materials and shape – smooth column, openworked lantern – are characteristic of the lanterns of the Poitou dead. A communal property, it bears witness to the medieval funeral heritage of Vienna, which is now part of the New Aquitaine region.
Historical sources, such as the Merimée or Monumentum base, highlight its remarkable conservation status, despite GPS coordinates deemed "a priori satisfactory". Its exact address, 6 Place des Acacias in Château-Larcher, and its Insee code (86065) confirm its anchoring in the territory of the former Poitou-Charentes region.
