Origin and history
The Hospital of Charity of Lavault-Sainte-Anne, located in the department of Allier in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, was built between 1909 and 1913. This architectural ensemble, designed by architect Jean Hardion for Viscount Paillhou, is part of the tradition of 19th-century philanthropic constructions. It combines the functions of hospital and orphanage, integrating hygienist innovations such as ventilation, central heating, and spaces dedicated to washing and drying laundry. The eclectic style, evoking anglo-norman, uses various materials such as polychrome brick and enamelled sandstone.
The buildings, organized around a court of honour, include the hospital, a bath building, two orphanages (for girls and boys), as well as reception pavilions and French-style gardens. The set is girded with a wall with a iron gate, reflecting a global design combining functionality and aesthetics. The establishment, registered as a historical monument in 2006, illustrates the evolution of medical and social norms in the early twentieth century.
Today converted to EHPAD, the Charity Hospital bears witness to the architectural and humanitarian heritage of its time. Its inscription as a historic monument in 2006 highlights its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. Protected elements include all buildings, gardens, and their fence, thus preserving the integrity of the site.
