Le lavoir (Case AD 287): Order of 12 July 2011

Origin and history

The Ile-aux-Marins washbasin is the only covered washbasin on the island, an essential building for the local population. It was fed by a water table and a stream, ensuring a continuous supply of water. This monument, classified in 2011, reflects the importance of collective infrastructure in the daily life of the time.

This wash is closely linked to the period of Great Fishing, a major economic activity for Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. It symbolizes the community organization around natural resources, where the inhabitants depended on water for their domestic and professional needs. Its architecture and use illustrate the social and hygienic practices of the time.

Ranked as a Historical Monument by order of 12 July 2011, the washhouse belongs today to the department. Although its exact location is approximate (precision noted 5/10), it remains a tangible vestige of local history, accessible to the public. Its preservation makes it possible to understand the lifestyle of the islanders during the Great Fishing.
