The washhouse and the water fountain, in full (Box AB 243; public domain, not cadastre): inscription by order of 27 December 2002

Origin and history

The water and water fountain of Cressia, built in the first half of the 19th century, illustrates a utilitarian architecture typical of the villages of the Jura plateau. Its structure consists of a hall covered with a cradle vault, directly surmounted by a lava roof, a local volcanic material. This style brings him closer to the Jurassian chapels and oratories, revealing continuity in regional construction techniques. Although the basins and the ground were rebuilt in concrete in 1940, the original lava roof was preserved, testifying to its partial authenticity.

In 1980, the cover of the washwater stream was extended to the building, modernizing its hydraulic system. This monument is part of the first generation of village water supply, marking a key step in improving the health and social conditions of rural communities in the 19th century. Its inscription in the Historical Monuments by decree of 27 December 2002 underlines its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its historical role in the daily life of the village.

The location of the washhouse, on the way to the Fruithouse in Cressia (Jura), reflects its integration into the rural fabric. Owned by the municipality, it now embodies a collective heritage, although its state of conservation and accessibility (which is considered "passible") invite careful preservation. Available sources, such as Monumentum, confirm its status as a representative element of the hydraulic and architectural heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
