Origin and history
The Carroi, Museum of Arts and History, was founded in 1906 by the Association of Friends of Old Chinon. Its collections, made up of donations, reflect local history and cover various fields: archaeology, fine arts, modern art and history. The museum is now housed in a 15th century house, formerly linked to the General States, making it an emblematic place of the Chinese heritage.
Between 1906 and 2014, collections were enriched by private donations, as well as by departmental and state deposits. Since 2014, the museum has been managed by the community of municipalities Chinon Vienne and Loire. Among his remarkable pieces are a 12th century Hispano-Mauresque fabric, a portrait of Rabelais by Delacroix, and a rich local statuary.
The building itself, classified as Maison des Etats Générals, is a 15th century mansion. This historic setting, combined with various collections, makes it a major cultural place in the Centre-Val de Loire region. The museum benefits from the label Musée de France, guaranteeing the quality of its collections and mediation.
