Origin and history
The Musée de Préhistoire corse et d'Archéologie de Sartène was created in 1977, under the initial management of the Conseil départemental de la Corse-du-Sud. It originated in a municipal excavation depot in 1969 in a former building that served as a stopping house between 1843 and 1945. This depot, transformed into the centre of Prehistory Corsica in 1970, was led by archaeologist Roger Grosjean until his death in 1975.
In 1977, the centre became a departmental archaeological museum, under the supervision of the Musées de France. Faced with the increase in collections, an extension of 1,400 m2 on three levels was built and inaugurated in 2009, during the Night of Museums. This project was financed by the General Council of South Corsica, the State, the Territorial Community of Corsica and European funds.
The museum's collections, enriched by Roger Grosjean's excavations and other regional discoveries, cover periods ranging from Prehistory to the early Middle Ages. With more than 250,000 objects, it is now the most important archaeological museum in Corsica. Since the merger of the departments and the Region, it is now part of the Community of Corsica.
