Origin and history

The Port Museum of Douarnenez, located in Port-Rhu near Tristan Island, was inaugurated in May 1993 on the former ria of Pouldavid. Born on the initiative of the Treizour association (founded in 1979), he succeeded the museum of the boat opened in 1985, became municipal in 1986 after the donation of his collection of hulls to the city. The project, supported by the municipality for its economic and tourist potential, was publicized by the magazine Le Chasse-Marée in 1986. The museum is distinguished by its two components: a museum on land in an old cannery of sardines, and a unique floating museum in France, opened from April to October, presenting boats accessible via a summer break.

The Port-Musée collection has more than 280 boats (including about 100 in reserve) and 10,000 objects related to the maritime worlds, covering fishing, cabotage and recreational activities. The iconic pieces include gabars, lobsters, flagship boats and cannery tools, illustrating the industrial and social history of Douarnenez, once the nerve centre of sardine fishing. However, the conservation of ships, such as the Notre-Dame de Rocamadour (deconstructed in 2023) or King Gradlon (sold in 2025), poses recurrent financial challenges, threatening the sustainability of this floating heritage.

The museum organizes temporary exhibitions, such as La révolution des sardinières (2024-2025) commemorating the centenary of the workers' strikes of 1924, or Entre les lines (2023) sur le travail des travailleurs de la cannerie Chancerelle. Summer entertainment, meetings with former sailors and film screenings complete the cultural offer. The Port Museum also collaborates with local associations, such as The Lightship Guardians, to preserve historic ships such as the Scarweather.

Ranked Musée de France, the site benefited from a modernisation in 2005-2006 to enrich its museumography, integrating multimedia and thematic paths. Its originality lies in the global approach of the boats, studied as witnesses to the territorial identities and the relationship between man and the sea. Despite its outreach, the museum faces funding challenges, notably for the maintenance of inactive boats, as the Armament of Lighthouses and Balises (APB) pointed out in 2025.

Outside the walls, the Port Museum extends to ships classified as historical monuments, such as the Audiernais (gabara) or the Red Ar Mor (sloop caseyeur), now based in other Breton ports. These elements, coupled with exhibitions on canneries and commemorations (postal stamp of 1988), anchor the museum in an approach of valorizing the Breton maritime heritage, between industrial memory and museum innovation.
