Origin and history
Lemoine House is a private residence designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas between 1994 and 1998. Sponsored by Jean-François Lemoine, former president of Groupe Sud Ouest's management board, who became a motor disabled after an accident in 1991, she incorporates bold architectural solutions to adapt to her disability. The house is organized on three levels (domestic rooms, living room, rooms) connected by a hydraulic lift platform of 3 x 3.5 m, symbol of its functional and experimental approach.
The building, extending over 500 m2 on a hill with panoramic views of Bordeaux, explores the themes of Koolhaas: dissymmetry, superposition of volumes and heterogeneity of materials. As soon as it was completed, it was awarded the Silver Square Prize in 1998, and was fully registered as a historical monument by order of 28 November 2002. Designed to evolve with the needs of its owners, it embodies a reflection on the adaptability of the habitat.
The Lemoine house was also used as a setting for the film Koolhaas Houselife (2008), documenting its daily use. Its heritage inscription highlights its role in the history of contemporary architecture, combining technical innovation and responding to a personal need. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its address on the 2 path of the Plateaux to Floirac, in Gironde (code Insee 33167).
