Origin and history

La grotto des Fées, also known as hole des Fées, is located in Leucate, in the department of Aude in the Occitanie region. Drained near the shore of the Leucate pond, it is distinguished by its multiple openings leading to drowned casings, extending 120 metres long and reaching 34 metres deep. This natural site, with its marked geological characteristics, has served as a refuge and a place of worship throughout times.

The first excavations, conducted between 1909 and 1919 by Th. and Ph. Helena, revealed varied archaeological furniture in the entrance and inside the cave. The objects discovered include flint knives, an incised vase, a hash polisher, side notch pebbles, bone beads, adorned pottery (perhaps campaniform), a claw pendant, and scattered bones, including three skulls studied by R. Riquet. These artifacts suggest a human occupation dating from Eneolithic III, specifically Chalcolithic (2000-1800 BC), a period marked by the joint use of stone and metal.

The cave also delivered Gallo-Roman-era objects, including terracotta ex-votos. These figures, roughly shaped in grey, yellow or red earth, represent deities such as Mercury, Minerva or Venus, as well as draped characters. They testify to local religious practices, where the inhabitants of Leucate offered these statuettes to the deities. These discoveries confirm the cultural importance of the site during antiquity.

Because of its archaeological and historical richness, the Cave of the Fairies was classified as historical monuments by order of 10 September 1924. Today, it remains an emblematic heritage of the municipality of Leucate, managed by the municipality and protected for future generations.
