Origin and history
The Abbatial House of Fontaine-le-Comte is a medieval building built in the 4th quarter of the 14th century, located in the municipality of the same name, in New Aquitaine. This building, classified as a Historical Monument, illustrates the importance of abbeys in the social and religious organization of the period. Its architecture reflects popular construction techniques at the end of the Middle Ages, with a facade inscribed in the inventory of historical monuments since 1929.
At the end of the 14th century, the Poitou region (now part of New Aquitaine) was marked by a rural life structured around ecclesiastical institutions. Abbeys, like Fontaine-le-Comte, played a central role in the local economy, land management and the spiritual life of communities. Their abbatial home served both as a residence for religious dignitaries and as a place to represent the power of the Church. Although little specific details of its history are available in current sources, this monument remains a tangible testimony of this pivotal period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
The protection of the abbey house by an order of 10 April 1929 emphasizes its heritage value. This decree specifically concerns the façade of the building, thus preserving a key architectural element. Today, the site is located at Place de l'Église address or 5460 Rue de l'Abbaye, depending on the sources, confirming its anchoring in the historic heart of Fontaine-le-Comte. The accuracy of its location is assessed as very satisfactory (note 8/10), facilitating its identification for visitors or researchers.
