Origin and history
The Logis de l'Évêque de La Perrière, located in Belforêt-en-Perche in Normandy, is an urban hotel built mainly in the seventeenth century. However, its main façade dates from the 16th century, and some materials come from an earlier building, erected between 1319 and 1356. This mixture of epochs testifies to its architectural evolution throughout the centuries, with reuses of older structures.
The monument has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1995, with a protection covering its facades, roofs, walls, as well as some pavilions and related buildings. These protected elements include the west pavilion, the pavilion to the right of the house, and the buildings surrounding the gate. The official inscription underlines its heritage importance and its remarkable state of conservation.
Although the sources do not specify its original use, the presence of the term "Logis de l'Evêque" suggests a link with an ecclesiastical figure, possibly a place of residence or reception for a bishop. Ancient materials, dating back to the 14th century, could indicate a religious or seigneurial origin, reused in later reconstructions.
The location of the house, at 35 Route de Sure in Belforêt-en-Perche, is confirmed by data from the Merimée database and GPS coordinates. The accuracy of this location is considered "a priori satisfactory", facilitating its identification in the local landscape. No information is available on its current accessibility, whether it be visits, room rental or accommodation.
The Orne department, where Belforêt-en-Perche is located, was historically marked by a rural and artisanal economy in the 17th century. Urban hotels of that time often served as residences for local elites, whether noble, ecclesiastical or bourgeois. These buildings reflected the social status of their owners and played a role in local administration or representation.
Today, the Logis de l'Evêque de La Perrière embodies a composite architectural heritage, combining medieval traces with a classical structure. Its classification among the Historical Monuments ensures its preservation, while offering a material testimony of regional history, construction techniques and social transformations throughout the centuries.
