Origin and history
Le logis de Lizardière is a mansion located in Broc, Maine-et-Loire department, Pays de la Loire region. Built in the second half of the 16th century, it illustrates the residential architecture of this period, with a typical organization of the seigneurial houses. The ensemble consists of two building bodies framed by a central tower flanked by a watch tower, serving as a stair turret. This device, common in the Angelian manors, reflects both residual defensive concerns and aesthetic symmetry.
The kitchens and fireplaces in the main residence are particularly remarkable, reflecting the relative comfort of the rural elites during the Renaissance. The oldest central tower (late 15th or early 16th century) incorporates a poterne and a lantern, rare elements for this period. The agricultural outbuildings, added at the end of the 19th century, as well as the renovations of the building bodies (17th century, then 19th century), show a continuous adaptation of the site to the needs of its occupants. These successive transformations make it an example of architectural evolution over centuries.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 15 February 1996, Lizardière's house is protected for its architectural ensemble (both houses and their tower, as well as an old walled parterre in ruins). This inscription highlights the heritage value of the site, both for its state of conservation and for its illustration of Angelvin constructive practices. The mansion is part of a rural landscape marked by feudal and post-medieval history, where seigneurial houses played a central role in local social and economic organization.
The location of the mansion, in the commune of Noyant-Villages (formerly Broc), makes it an element of the heritage of the Pays de la Loire, a region rich in Renaissance buildings. Its exact address, 5064 L'Izardière, and its Insee code (49228) link it administratively to Maine-et-Loire. Although the sources do not specify its current use (visits, rentals, etc.), its listing as historical monuments guarantees its preservation for future generations.
