Origin and history
The home of Nouailhas, located in Vicq-sur-Breuilh, is a historical monument dating back to the first half of the 16th century. Jean de Salagnac, prothonotary of the Holy See and influential ecclesiastical figure (prieur, parish priest, canon), heir to the seigneury of Vicq in 1515, built a castle there. This first building was partially replaced or transformed in the 17th century, when the present house body and its outbuildings were built.
The estate consists of a main rectangular building, flanked by two small aligned wings and two large wings of outbuildings in return. The northern facade, the main one, has retained its homogenous original appearance. Inside, a two-flyed straight staircase with a wooden balustrade carved with candelabra balusters serves the floors. Each level consists of two symmetrical pieces on both sides, decorated with French ceilings.
The house and its outbuildings, whose facades and roofs have been protected since 1992, illustrate the aristocratic or ecclesiastical residential architecture of New Aquitaine. Their layout and decorative elements (scaling, ceilings) reflect the social status of their sponsors, combining functionality and prestige. However, the accuracy of their location remains limited (level 5/10 depending on the sources).
