Origin and history
The house of the Varennes is a private property located in Landes, Charente-Maritime, dating from the 2nd half of the 16th century. This monument illustrates the architecture of the late Renaissance, notably by its porch body of stone entrance, typical of this period. It was registered as a historical monument by order of 29 November 1948, because of its heritage value.
The gate in the middle of the wall, surmounted by an armoured shield, gives access to a courtyard leading to the main house. This one-storey building features windows that are characteristic of the Renaissance to 17th century transition. The entrance door, dated from the late 16th or early 17th century, is framed by doric columns and surmounted by a triangular pediment. Inside, a stone staircase with parallel ramps and a Louis XV fireplace (18th century) testify to subsequent stylistic developments.
The house of the Varennes thus embodies the architectural heritage of New Aquitaine, mixing residual defensive elements and Renaissance ornaments. Its inscription as a Historic Monument underlines its importance in the local heritage, although its precise location (7 Rue de la Fontaine) and access to it remain limited as private property.
