Origin and history
The Logis du Côteau, located in the municipality of Bessay (Vendée), is a monument whose seigneurial history remains poorly documented. The main body of the house dates from the second half of the 16th century, reflecting the architectural characteristics of the late Renaissance. This original building was profoundly transformed and expanded in 1770, incorporating 18th-century stylistic elements, without the sources specifying the motivations or sponsors of this work.
The site has been partially protected since 1996, with an inscription under the title of Historical Monuments covering the escape (seigneurial Pigeon) as well as the facades and roofs of the buildings making up the house. The exact address, 1 The Coteau, corresponds to a rural setting typical of the vendean bocage, although the accuracy of its geographical location is considered a priori satisfactory (note 6/10). No information is available on its current accessibility (visits, accommodation, or events).
The archives mention his belonging to the department of Vendée ( Pays de la Loire region), under the code Insee 85023, but do not detail the original use of the house, nor the seigneurial families who occupied it. The escape, however, is a protected element, emphasizing its ancient status as an agricultural and residential estate, characteristic of the local seigneuries between Renaissance and modern times.
