Origin and history
The Logis du Fort in Cheneché, located in Saint-Martin-la-Pallu, is a monument whose origins date back mainly to the seventeenth century. It is a complex built on a rectangular plot surrounded by ditches, with the house occupying the east wing. Although the main elements date from the 17th century, part of the current building results from a 19th century reconstruction after an older wing was destroyed by fire. This house ends with a rectangular pavilion at its northeast end, extended by a wing of moellons in partially coated communes.
Dependencies include a wing forming a square return, now shortened from its 19th century configuration. In contrast, the south wing was enlarged with two additional returns. The access to the courtyard is through an east gate, overlooking a broken-arched bellows bridge, which leads to a parcel housing a dovecote. The latter, as well as the bridge and portal, were registered in the Historical Monuments by order of 15 June 2004.
The site illustrates a marked architectural evolution, combining 17th century remains and later reconstructions. The ditches surrounding the plot suggest a defensive or seigneurial origin, although the sources do not specify its initial use. The dovecote, a protected element, bears witness to the economic importance of this type of building in the rural areas of the modern era, often associated with seigneurial privileges or an organized farm.
