Donjon, called the house of the Prior, and its moats (cf. D 610, 1254, 1256) : entry by order of 22 December 1989

Origin and history

The residence of the Prior of Lurcy-le-Bourg, located in the commune of Lurcy-le-Bourg in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a 14th century dungeon. This building, surrounded by moat, is representative of the defensive buildings of the medieval period in this region. It is now classified as a Historical Monument, with specific protection for the dungeon and its moats, formalized by an order in 1989.

In the 14th century, Burgundy was a region marked by political tensions and conflicts, particularly related to the Hundred Years' War. The dungeons, like that of Lurcy-le-Bourg, served both as a seigneurial residence and as a place of protection for local populations. These constructions reflected the power of lords or religious institutions, such as priories, which played a central role in the social and economic organization of rural territories.

The residence of the Prior is identified in the heritage bases under the code Insee 58147, attached to the Department of Nièvre and the municipality of Lurcy-le-Bourg. Although the available sources do not specify its current use (visit, rental, accommodation), its registration as Historic Monuments in 1989 underscores its heritage importance. The location data, considered satisfactory, allow it to be located precisely at 8 Le Bourg, in the centre of the commune.
