Origin and history
The residence-accommodation of Haut-Rocher in Soulgé-sur-Ouette is a medieval building built in the 14th century. This monument, classified among the Historical Monuments, is distinguished by its typical architecture of the period, including a main house body, a low wing dedicated to the bakery and a barn on poles. These elements reflect an integrated domestic and agricultural organization, characteristic of the rural habitats of this period.
The location of the site, in the commune of Soulgé-sur-Ouette (département de la Mayenne, Pays de la Loire region), is attested by data from the Merimée database and GPS coordinates. The monument was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 30 October 1989, protecting its house, bakery and barn. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (level 5/10), depending on available sources.
In the 14th century, lodging houses like the Haut-Rocher house played a central role in rural life. They served as both a residence for owners or farmers, a production space (such as a bakery) and a storage area for crops (grange). These buildings illustrated the self-sufficiency of the agricultural estates of the time, while at the same time testifying to the construction techniques of wood and stone then in use. Their preservation now offers an overview of lifestyles and social organization in rural areas in the Middle Ages.
