Origin and history

The Louis-Liard de Falaise High School came into being in the early 19th century, when the city built a college in 1803, located in the enclosure of Falaise Castle. In 1885, new premises were inaugurated by Louis Liard, but the building was completely destroyed in June 1944 during the battles of the Battle of Normandy, which ravaged two thirds of the city. The reconstruction of the high school was then decided in the Saint-Jean district, a peripheral area spared by the bombings.

The project of the new high school is entrusted to architects Léon Rème and Pierre Dureuil. Inaugurated in 1953 by Minister André Marie, the building adopts a curved plan, with a two-storey front façade framed with lateral parts on one floor, connected by a large awning. Between 1958 and 1970, further extensions were made, and the works of art integrated into the establishment were designed by Michel Fauconnier and Yvonne Guégan. In 1980, the school city was split into a separate high school and college.

The facades and roofs of the Lycée Louis-Liard are listed as historical monuments by decree of 16 August 2010, thus recognizing the heritage value of this post-war school architecture. The site, owned by the Normandy region, bears witness to the French reconstruction and the evolution of educational establishments in the 20th century.
