Origin and history

This store is distinguished by its Art Nouveau front, a rare style in Nevers. In 1905 she was commissioned by architect Georges-Théodore Renaud and by the faïencier Alexandre Bigot, illustrating the creative audacity of the time. The decor, especially The Lady in the mirror, reflects a symbolic sensitivity, typical of the artistic currents of the early twentieth century.

Long hidden under a formwork for a modern front, this facade was rediscovered in the 1990s during work. Its metal curtain, entrance tiles and carrying structure, protected since 2011, demonstrate the desire to preserve this unique heritage. The exact address, 43 Charles-de-Gaulle Avenue, confirms its anchoring in the city centre of Nevers.

Ranked a Historic Monument, this store embodies the alliance between commerce and art. The collaboration between an architect and a famous ceramicist such as Bigot underlines the importance of art trades in the realization of sustainable works. Today, private property, it recalls the golden age of artistic fronts, before their decline in the face of modern standardization.
