Hospital Cross: Order of 13 December 1937

Origin and history

The Hosannière Cross of Maillezais is an emblematic monument located in the cemetery of the commune of Maillezais, in Vendée. This type of cross, often associated with religious processions, bears witness to the local architectural and spiritual heritage. Its location in a cemetery suggests a link to medieval funeral or commemorative practices.

Classified as historical monuments by decree of 13 December 1937, this cross illustrates the importance attached to the preservation of religious and symbolic buildings in France. The Hosannière Crosses, usually erected near churches or cemeteries, served as a gathering point for liturgical ceremonies, especially during Easter celebrations. Their presence reflects the community organization around places of worship and sacred spaces in the Middle Ages.

The region of Pays de la Loire, and more particularly the Vendée, is home to many similar monuments, witness to a rich religious and cultural history. These crosses, often in stone, were visual and spiritual landmarks for local populations, marking the landscape and structuring collective practices. Their conservation allows today to study the traditions and crafts of the time.
