Origin and history
The town hall of Lilas is part of a municipal complex designed in 1902 by architect Léopold Bevière, on the site of the old garden of Paul de Kock. This monument, emblematic of the Third Republic, is inspired by the Grand Trianon and is distinguished by its main facade opening onto a triangular park facing the rue de Paris. The ensemble includes, in addition to the town hall, a festive hall, and two schools, reflecting a desire for multipurpose public facilities for the municipality.
The festive hall, originally the largest of the Parisian crown, was decorated in 1911 by the painter Victor Tardieu. His frescoes, inspired by Giambattista Tiepolo, adorn a ceiling in marouflé canvases and represent local personalities as well as significant events in the history of the Lilas. This place, today versatile (theatre, cinema, concerts), saw its interior inscribed with historical monuments in 1990, highlighting its heritage value.
The architectural complex, located at 2 Waldeck-Rousseau Street, illustrates the urban and cultural ambition of the time. Its integration into the local landscape, combined with its civic and artistic function, makes it a remarkable testimony of the Republican heritage in Île-de-France. The partial protection of the festive hall reinforces its status as a heritage to be preserved, while perpetuating its community use.
