Origin and history
The town hall of Poilly-sur-Serein is a public building located in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It is distinguished by the presence of a dovecote of the seventeenth century, inscribed in historical monuments in 1968. This dovecote, of circular plan, is located in the school yard and has marked architectural features, such as segmental arch openings and stone bolts.
The dovecote, originally linked to the Poilly castle probably built in the 15th century, was modified in the 18th century, especially in terms of its openings. He probably replaced an older dovecote. This type of construction reflects the importance of pigeons in seigneurial areas, symbols of feudal rights and agricultural wealth.
The building is now owned by the municipality. Its conical roof, covered with flat tiles and surmounted by a pigeon-girouette, as well as its internal wooden structure, testify to traditional construction techniques. The dovecote illustrates Burgundy's rural heritage and its inscription in 1968 highlights its historical and architectural value.
