Origin and history

The house at 6 rue du Cloître in Laon is an 18th-century building. This monument is included in the inventory of Historic Monuments, with a specific protection for its monumental gate on street, formalized by a decree of 13 June 1927. Its architecture reflects the typical characteristics of bourgeois or notable dwellings of this period in the region.

Laon, the historic town of Picardie (now in the Hauts-de-France), was in the 18th century an important administrative and religious center. The houses of that time were often built there for wealthy families, artisans or clergy. Their role in the urban fabric was both residential and representative, illustrating the social status of their owners.

The preservation of this monumental door bears witness to the attention paid to some emblematic architectural elements, even when the rest of the building has been modified.
