Origin and history

This house, located at 6 rue Saint-Cyr in Laon in the department of Aisne, is an example of 17th century civil architecture. It is distinguished by its monumental gate on street, an architectural element that led to its inscription as Historic Monument by order of 13 June 1927. This type of door, often open, reflects the social status of the owners of the time and the importance attached to the appearance of bourgeois or aristocratic houses in cities.

Laon, a historic town in the Picardie region (now integrated with Hauts-de-France), was an active urban centre in the 17th century, marked by an economy based on agriculture, commerce and crafts. The houses of this period, like this one, often served as residences for wealthy families or local notables.
