Origin and history

The house at 24 rue Saint-François in Quimper is an example of traditional Breton civil architecture from the first half of the 17th century. Its wooden façade, covered with a crepasing on lattis, illustrates the local construction techniques of the period. This type of house, characteristic of the historic center of Quimper, reflects medieval urbanism and still reborn in the city at the beginning of the modern era.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 22 May 1956, this house is one of the protected elements of the Quimperian heritage. The protection specifically concerns its street façade as well as the corresponding roof slope, highlighting its architectural and historical interest. Its location in the old district, still marked by a dense structure and narrow streets, bears witness to the urban organization of Quimper before the great upheavals of the following centuries.

Wood-panned houses like this often served as housing for local artisans, merchants or bourgeois families. In Quimper, a dynamic city thanks to its port activity and its administrative role in Cornwall, these houses participated in economic and social life. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the lifestyles and constructive know-how of 17th century Brittany.
