Jules Émile Zing - Painter Born in this house in 1882.

Origin and history

The house at 31 rue du Faubourg-de-Besançon in Montbéliard is a building of the early seventeenth century, built in 1610 as indicated by the date engraved above the front door. It is distinguished by its right wing with wooden strips, typical of the architecture of this period in the region. In the 18th century, major changes were made, including the construction of a right wing back on the courtyard and a staircase, reflecting the evolution of architectural needs and styles.

Between 1823 and 1859, the house underwent other significant changes: the left wing was built, and a storehouse of marshal-ferrant was built at the back of the courtyard, replacing an old barn and a garden. These additions illustrate the adaptation of the building to the emerging craft and industrial activities of the time. The house is also famous for being the birthplace of painter Jules Émile Zing (1882-1942), adding a cultural and artistic dimension to his history.

In 1989, the street façade and the roof of the house were listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 7 July, thus recognizing its heritage value. This protection highlights the importance of preserving the architectural elements of the different epochs that make up this building, a witness to the urban and social evolutions of Montbéliard since the 17th century.
